Description
1. Overview
Tesamorelin is a synthetic growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH) analogue. It stimulates the pituitary gland to increase growth hormone secretion, which subsequently increases IGF-1 levels. In the United States, tesamorelin is an approved prescription treatment for reducing excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. It is not indicated as a general weight-loss medication.
2. Potential Benefits
- Reduction of visceral abdominal fat: The primary approved use is reducing excess abdominal fat associated with HIV lipodystrophy.
- Metabolic effects: Clinical research has evaluated its effects on visceral adipose tissue and related metabolic parameters.
- Growth-hormone pathway support: Tesamorelin stimulates endogenous growth hormone release rather than directly supplying growth hormone.
The approved indication is specific; these effects should not be interpreted as proof that tesamorelin is an appropriate treatment for ordinary obesity or bodybuilding.
3. How It Works
Tesamorelin acts as a GHRH analogue, stimulating growth hormone release from the pituitary. This increases circulating IGF-1 and influences fat metabolism, including visceral adipose tissue.
4. TSM20 / 20 mg
If TSM20 refers to a product labeled tesamorelin 20 mg, the “20 mg” describes the stated amount of peptide in that particular product. It should not automatically be interpreted as the approved daily dose. FDA-approved tesamorelin products have specific formulations and dosing instructions, and different formulations are not necessarily interchangeable.
5. Possible Side Effects
Potential adverse effects include:
- Injection-site redness, itching, or discomfort
- Joint pain
- Muscle pain
- Peripheral edema/swelling
- Increased IGF-1 levels
- Glucose intolerance or diabetes
- Hypersensitivity reactions
6. Important Safety Information
Tesamorelin is contraindicated in pregnancy, active malignancy, certain disorders affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, and known hypersensitivity to the drug or its ingredients. Long-term cardiovascular safety has not been established.
